Royal Mosa (1883 Maastricht)

Koninklijke Mosa is a Dutch manufacturer of ceramic tiles, earthenware and pottery, based in Maastricht. The company was founded in 1883 by Hubert Gérard Louis (Louis I) Regout, the fifth son of Petrus Laurentius Regout, together with his son Louis II Regout. At the time, the factory was located on the territory of the municipality of Meerssen; nowadays Maastricht. The company was initially called Louis Regout & Zonen and in 1883 it was the first Dutch porcelain factory. Initially, they mainly made blue Chinese imitation porcelain. In 1888 they also started the manufacture of ceramic wall tiles. The porcelain factory was then called Mosa Porcelain.

The production of earthenware started in 1932, as the demand for porcelain fell. The Second World War brought shortages of raw materials, while many personnel were employed in Germany. The factory was also bombed just before the liberation, but in 1949 it was back to the level of 1939.

In 1947, the ceramic designer Edmond Bellefroid was recruited to design and manufacture designer tableware. Other industrial designers who worked for Mosa for a longer period of time were Jef Schijns and Pieter Stockmans. In addition, attention was also paid to floor tile manufacture, for which purpose a new factory was opened in Limmel in 1957.

In 1968 Mosa ceased to be a family business and became an open limited company. In 1972 the last member of the Regout family retired and the company came into the hands of the Thyssen Bornemisza group. In 1975 this group sold it to the construction division of DSM. In 1983, on the occasion of its 100th anniversary, the company received the designation "Royal". Since 1984 is was sold to different investment companies.

In addition to the showroom in Maastricht, there are showrooms in Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Berlin and London. Koninklijke Mosa is one of the more important employers in the Limburg capital.
