Petrus Regout & Co (1834-1870)
In 1834 Petrus Laurentius Regout (1801-1878) founded Petrus Regout & Co.. Maastricht was home to the first large-scale mechanized factory in The Netherlands. In 1878, at Regout's death, the company (than known as "De Sphinx") employed 2,500 workers and was internationally known for its glassware, crockery and other household pottery. The biography of Regout, who became the founder of the Dutch Industrial Club in The Hague (Vereeniging van en voor Nederlandsche Industrieelen) and a member of parliament (Eerste Kamer) reads like a novel: nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petrus_Laurentius_Regout.
Royal Sphinx (1870-2019)
De Sphinx is seen as the cradle of the industrial revolution in the Netherlands. It became one of the world's largest companies for glassware and pottery and was later mainly known for its tiles and sanitary ware, such as washbasins and toilet bowls. The factory ceased to exist in 2009, although the brand name "Sphinx" was used by the Swiss Geberit until 2019.
