Biography
De Nooijer was born during World War II on 15 June 1943 in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. He studied at the "Academie voor Industriële Vormgeving" (nowadays the famous Design Academy) in Eindhoven between 1960-1965.
The central theme in Paul de Nooijer's work is the contrast between illusion and reality. Key concepts in his work are: 'Transformation', 'time', which is often manipulated, and 'the artist and his model' (especially in the early period very often family, such as his wife Françoise and his son Menno and self-portraits). His international breakthrough comes after winning the Grand Prix of the city of Royan for a series of photomontages (1974). The first period falls under the heading of 'fantastic photography' with strangely distorted images and persons, highly manipulated work, which sometimes comes across as surreal. There is also a lot of nudity (eroticism, voyeurism, fetishism) in De Nooijer's work. His early work can be categorized as 'surreal' (surrealistisch) and 'magical-realistic' (magisch-realistisch).
Numerous national and international exhibitions, both solo and in groups, follow from the mid-seventies. His list of solo and group exhibitions and recordings in (museums) collections includes Center Georges Pompidou, Paris, Tate Modern, London, Fotomuseum The Hague, Museum Ludwig, Cologne, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Rijks Museum, Van Abbe Museum, Eindhoven and Museum of Modern Art, Yokohama.
