Biography
Vaarzon Morel is a painters family for ages. Wilhelm Ferdinand Abraham Isaac (Willem) Vaarzon Morel (1868-1955) already was born into a creative family. This W.F.A.I. Vaarzon Morel is the father of the painter Willem Vaarzon Morel (1901-1982) and the grandfather of the famous horse painter Wim Vaarzon Morel Jr. (1931), who received a Prix de Rome, the silver award in the graphics category, in 1960 and great-grandfather of flamenco guitarist Eric Vaarzon Morel (1961). The painting on sale is from Wim Vaarzon Morel jr. who was born on 27 June 1931 in Amsterdam. He studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière (Paris) in 1950, the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten (Amsterdam) from 1953-1957 and at Nationaal Hoger Instituut voor Schone Kunsten (Antwerpen) in 1959. Among his teachers were Otto B. de Kat and Jan Wiegers, the equally famous Groninger Ploeg painter. He was an active painter between 1946 and 1995. From 1946 he worked in Veere (Zeeland) and from 1969 until 1995 in Amsterdam. From 1962-1969 he was an art teacher at the Rijksacademie voor beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam. From 1969-1984 he was a professor at the same academy in Amsterdam. His genre paintings of animals (mainly horses) are sought-after and known to be the best works of his long career at top level. He was a member of many societies, like Zeeuwse Kunstkring, Arti et Amicitiae and Nederlandse Kring van Tekenaars. At age 92, he lives in Oostzaan, near Amsterdam.
